The Sloane Ranger Handbook laid down mock instructions, practically all of which remain true, bar a few anachronisms: “Read – Dick Francis and the FT; Giggle – in bed; Cry – when you sing carols; Not cry – at funerals; kill salmon, drink seriously, put the Great into Great Britain and the Hooray into Hooray Henry and live in the country (or, failing that, Kensington Square).” Or, even better, Kensington Palace, currently being remodelled to house the Cambridges.
