Even with its financial troubles, HMV remains a purveyor of new pop and has been laying on gig after gig in February to showcase what it thinks is the Next Big Thing in 2012.
Well, some of these Next Big Things have been around for donkeys – Field Music, Frightened Rabbit – but there’s still an impressive list of bands yet to be heard. With three bands per gig, you’re guaranteed to hear something new.
So, in the upstairs bar at Highbury’s Garage, three bands linked only in style by the fact at least one member is playing an acoustic guitar, take to the stage at an unreasonably early hour.
Headlining the night and playing to an audience of what appears to be mainly dads and teenagers is Ahab, a country-rock group overdosing on image, four part harmonies and stereotypical chord changes reminiscent of ‘70s Eagles. While their playing is fine and tight, and their harmonies actually quite lovely, this is a band that completely lacks any substance. Ahab almost seem manufactured, with a member to suit every kind of record-buying, swooning teen girl. There’s the ‘50s-styled heart-throb, greased back hair and the twinkling eyes of a young Michael Keaton; the lanky vest and trilby wearing Babyshambles wannabe; the bearded rockier Biffy Clyro lookalike and the black haired, tattooed, goth-influenced member, whose angelic voice in no way suits his look. The drummer seems pretty normal. The songs consist of your everyday country rock references – mamas, south-bound trains, North Carolina, wagon wheels – it’s like Mumford meets Garth Brooks. One song, title unknown but probably called something like ‘My, My, My’, was the highlight of the set, showing that these lads can write and perform at least one pretty ballad that, while still packed with clichés, isn’t quite so beige.
