First contact: Navajo residents get connected

Nageezi - A dollar a month.

That's what 64 years, Mary Woody will pay for phone service at home Huerfano.

Woody last month has been among the 70 percent of Navajo residents without basic communication services. On Wednesday, she helped the chapters and the Nageezi Huerfano celebrate the installation of infrastructure which will provide telephony and Internet to 1500 people in the communities Navajo Housing Authority.

"We use cable, fiber, radio, whatever works," said Jon Landstrom, Chief Operating Officer of Sacred Wind Communications, the company that provides telephone and Internet services to all or part of 22 Navajo chapters .

"We also have a new technology of solar energy," said Landstrom. "We will use whatever it takes to do the job."

Sacred Wind, using a combination of all available technologies, is to link the most remote homes on the reservation 27,000-square-mile in the digital communication network.

Attractions for 2011 included a Giant Puppet, urban dance, the Titan Robot, Shopping Trolley Grannies, Fire Horse, Ghostbusters car, Dr Who Tardis and Dalek, a Scream Tent, a Giant Cycling Hippo, fancy dress catwalk, funfair rides/stalls, samba band, food stalls, children’s activities & craft stalls.

Sheffield Young Advisors, UK Youth Parliament and Sheffield Youth Council had a spooky stall of their own outside City Hall – giving away free tickets to After Dark.

Duties include customer service, replenishing stock, processing deliveries, setting up papers for the day, cleaning, stock check/counting and till work a reliable, willing and flexible person is essential within the team. Retail salespersons assist customers in finding what they are looking for. They also try to increase sales by describing a product’s features, demonstrating its uses, and promoting its value. In addition to selling, many retail salespersons conduct financial transactions with their customers. This usually involves receiving payments by cash, check, debit card, or credit card; operating cash registers; and bagging or packaging purchases. Depending on the hours they work, retail salespersons may have to open or close cash registers. This work may include counting the money in the register and separating charge slips, coupons, and exchange vouchers. In addition, retail salespersons may help stock shelves or racks, arrange for mailing or delivery of purchases, mark price tags, take inventory, and prepare displays. All retail salespersons must recognize security risks and thefts and understand their organisation’s procedure for handling such situations—procedures that may include notifying security guards or calling police. You will be working in a small team and be on your feet for a lot of the day.
