In his first book in almost ten years, Jeffrey Eugenides follows three Brown graduates in the early '80s as they deal with the complications of their relationships. Madeline Hanna has been dumped by her boyfriend Leonard Bankhead as the novel begins, only to find that he has been admitted into a mental hospital as a diagnosed manic-depressive. She skips her graduation ceremony to go and see him and they soon move to an isolated scientific research facility where the delicate nature of their relationship forms around his disease. Meanwhile, Mitchell Grammaticus, a close friend of Madeline who has decided he wants to marry her, travels around Europe and India trying to both forget the sting of Madeline's wavering disinterest and to find something more substantial than his intellectual interest in religion has offered so far.
