They call themselves The Beanie Babes, said the group's ringleader, 90-year-old Ethel Ostrowski, who is known as "Mrs. O."
Mrs. O has knitted more than 500 caps in the two years since she got involved with Grass Roots4theTroops.org, a nonprofit organization run by Sarasota resident Gerry Tausch.
In 2009, Tausch approached Mrs. O's grandson, Mark Berrier, at his business, Area Office Machines, to ask if he knew anyone who enjoyed knitting because she was seeking volunteers for her organization.
Berrier called his grandmother immediately because he knew she was just the woman for the job.
In the beginning, Mrs. O worked alone, knitting a few caps each week. Her friends and neighbors at Bay Village quickly took notice. Soon, a group met every Monday to knit together.
A staff member in the Bay Village residence office dubbed them The Beanie Babes, and the name stuck.
The Beanie Babes currently has 14 members who produce, on average, 50 beanies a month.
