Children hated shopping. They soon learned that going shopping often meant protracted waiting, standing on sidewalks outside stores while their mothers chatted.

Many hats were purchased at Miss Dunning's Millinery at 811 10th St. Some of her hats were handmade, exclusively designed for customers' significant occasions.
Wedding hats for brides and for their mothers were among her specialties, as well as hats purchased for receptions, anniversaries, parties and other special events.
Most women wouldn't dream of going out without wearing a hat, even just to go to the store to buy groceries. Of course, some hats were much dressier than others and were decorated with a variety of adornments.
