Bellingham women not just knitting for charity
A tree in the Bellingham Senior Center cafeteria is bundled in colorful, knitted winter apparel.
The task now is to get the hundreds of hats, mittens, child-sized sweaters and baby booties off the plastic pine boughs and onto local residents.
The items will be given to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at St. Blaise Church in mid-December as part of an annual Christmas tradition.
“We start in January,” said Sandie Dwyer, one of the more than half a dozen women who knit for the tree and other charitable causes throughout the year.
The women estimate that they have been knitting for at least a decade.
“It’s just continued,” Dwyer said. “Every year it gets a little bigger.”
The women knit year-round as a group, meeting every Monday morning in the cafeteria at the senior center around one of the tables. Two cardboard boxes behind the giving tree hold the overflow clothing, a testament to their perseverance.
